Hotel-Quality Bedding: How to Wash It So It Stays Soft and Fragrant

Why does hotel bedding always look crisp, feel soft and smell of clean linen, while at home the same result seems out of reach? The secret is not expensive fabric, but the right washing, drying and ironing. This guide shows how to wash bedding so it stays soft, neat and fragrant – just like in the best hotels.

How to wash bedding so it stays soft and fragrant

Why hotel bedding feels different

A few simple things create that hotel impression:

  • clean with no residue – a precise detergent dose, so the fabric never feels stiff or sticky;
  • softness – fabric softener that coats the fibres and makes them smoother;
  • a smooth surface – bedding pressed with an iron or a steamer;
  • a subtle scent – clean and unobtrusive, not sharp and chemical.

All of it can be repeated at home.

How often to wash bedding

In summer, or when someone is ill, it is worth changing bedding more often.

How to wash bedding: 5 steps

1. Prepare the bedding

Turn duvet covers and pillowcases inside out, close any zips and buttons. Wash bedding separately from towels – towels shed lint and rub against the fabric.

2. Don't overload the machine

Bedding needs room for the water to circulate. In an overloaded machine the fabric rinses less well and creases more. It is best to wash one set at a time.

3. Choose the right temperature

  • 40 °C – for everyday washing of coloured and blended-fibre bedding;
  • 60 °C – for white cotton bedding and whenever hygiene matters, for example after illness;
  • 30 °C or a delicate cycle – for silk and other sensitive bedding.

Always follow the care label. A higher temperature weakens the fragrance, so take care of the scent in the other steps – with softener and ironing.

4. Measure the detergent precisely

Use 30–50 ml of detergent per wash, depending on water hardness. More detergent does not clean bedding better – it leaves residue that makes fabric stiff and lets the scent fade faster. Scented laundry detergents work at 30–60 °C, so they suit both everyday and hygienic washing.

5. Use softener in the rinse cycle

Fabric softener gives bedding that hotel softness and helps the scent last longer. Because it is released during the rinse, its fragrance survives even a hotter wash. Pour 30–50 ml of scented fabric softener into the rinse compartment and choose the same scent number as your detergent.

How to dry bedding so it doesn't crease

  1. Take it out straight away. Bedding left in the machine creases and picks up a musty smell.
  2. Shake it out. Give it a few firm shakes before hanging – some of the creases will fall out by themselves.
  3. Hang it straight. Hang sheets and covers at full length, in a well-ventilated place or outdoors.
  4. Don't over-dry. Bedding left too long in a dryer becomes rough and harder to smooth out.

Ironing – the main hotel secret

Ironing is what gives bedding that smooth, fresh hotel look. It is best ironed while still slightly damp – creases come out far more easily.

Fill your iron with scented distilled water: it protects the iron from limescale, and the steam adds an extra layer of fragrance to the bedding. When there is no time to iron, pillowcases and the duvet cover can be refreshed quickly with the wrinkle release spray.

How to store bedding so it keeps its scent

  • Only when completely dry. Even slightly damp bedding will pick up a bad smell in the wardrobe.
  • In a ventilated wardrobe. Don't store bedding in plastic bags – the fabric needs to breathe.
  • As sets. A hotel trick: fold the sheet and duvet cover into one of the matching pillowcases. The wardrobe stays tidy and you find the full set at once.

The most common bedding washing mistakes

  • too much detergent – the fabric turns stiff;
  • an overloaded machine – bedding rinses badly and creases;
  • washing bedding together with towels – lint ends up on the fabric;
  • leaving laundry in the machine for too long – a musty smell appears;
  • storing bedding while still damp, or in plastic bags.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature should bedding be washed at?

40 °C is enough for everyday washing. White cotton bedding, especially after illness, is worth washing at 60 °C. For silk and other sensitive bedding choose 30 °C or a delicate cycle. Always follow the care label.

How do I make bedding soft?

Use a precise detergent dose, add softener in the rinse cycle, don't overload the machine and don't over-dry the bedding.

How do I make bedding smell good for longer?

Combine a detergent and softener from the same scent line, iron with scented distilled water and store bedding dry in a ventilated wardrobe.

Does bedding need to be ironed?

Not necessarily, but ironing is what creates the hotel look. If there is no time, at least shake the bedding out well before drying and hang it straight.

How often should bedding be changed?

Pillowcases once a week, the duvet cover and sheet every 1–2 weeks.
