Scented Distilled Water - The Secret to Easier Ironing

Many of us think of ironing as a tedious chore, yet the right products can turn it into a pleasant ritual. One of those secrets, used by hotels and luxury brands alike, is scented distilled water.

It may seem that tap water is good enough for an iron, but that choice is often the reason appliances break down or clothes get ruined. In this article we explain why this product deserves a place in your home.

Scented distilled water

1. Scented distilled water protects your iron from limescale

Tap water is usually hard - rich in minerals and limescale. When such water is heated, deposits form inside the iron and clog the steam vents.

By using scented distilled water, you:

  • avoid limescale build-up in the iron;
  • extend the appliance's lifespan;
  • ensure an even flow of steam, with no brown deposit stains on light-coloured clothes.

Important: some iron manufacturers, such as Philips and Tefal, do not recommend scented water in their appliances. Before filling an iron or steam generator with scented distilled water, check its instructions.

If limescale has already built up, you will find how to remove it and which water iron manufacturers recommend in how to descale an iron.

2. A luxurious aroma with no extra effort

The biggest difference between plain distilled water and the scented version is the fragrance. As you iron, the hot steam penetrates deep into the fabric fibres and leaves behind a subtle feeling of cleanliness and luxury.

Scented water works more effectively than perfumes or sprays, because:

  • the aroma is distributed evenly through the whole fabric;
  • the heat locks the scent into the fibres, so it lasts longer;
  • while you iron, your home fills with a pleasant aroma that works like a gentle scent therapy.

3. Easier ironing

Distilled water helps steam pass more easily through thick or heavily creased fabrics such as linen and cotton. The moisture and the aromatic substances soften the fibres, so the iron glides more smoothly and creases come out faster. 4. Where else can you use this water?

Although its main purpose is ironing, scented distilled water is versatile:

  • In garment steamers: it refreshes clothes between washes and removes lingering odours such as food or tobacco.
  • For refreshing home textiles: spray a little onto curtains or decorative cushions before steaming.

In summary: an investment in quality

If you value your time and want your clothes to look and smell as though they came from a dry cleaner, scented distilled water is an essential. It is a simple way to protect an expensive appliance and bring a little more elegance into everyday life.
